There’s something magical about chaat — that perfect balance of tangy, spicy, crunchy, and creamy. Now imagine all of that goodness layered into one gorgeous bowl. This Chaat Dip brings the vibrant flavors of Indian street food to your table in a party-ready form that’s as fun to make as it is to eat!
Chaat has been a beloved part of Indian street food culture for centuries, originating in the bustling markets of North India — particularly in cities like Delhi and Lucknow. The word chaat comes from the Hindi word “chaatna,” meaning “to lick,” because the flavors are so irresistible that you can’t help but savor every bite. Traditionally, chaat was served as a quick roadside snack layered with yogurt, chutneys, potatoes, and crispy elements, creating a medley of sweet, tangy, spicy, and savory notes. Over time, it’s evolved into countless regional variations, from papdi chaat to bhel puri — and now, this fun, modern dip version.

What Is a Chaat Dip?
Think of it as your favorite chaat — deconstructed, reimagined, and layered to perfection. Each spoonful bursts with flavor: creamy yogurt, hearty black chickpeas, tender potatoes, juicy tomatoes, and the unmistakable crunch of sev and papdi. It’s a crowd-pleaser that combines classic Indian ingredients with the ease of a layered dip.
Serve it chilled, layered in a shallow dish so every bite gets a little bit of everything. And of course, don’t forget the crispy papdi on the side for scooping—it’s what makes this dip irresistibly snackable.
