The amazing taste of ground nuts, just a hint of sweet, and the nostalgic flavor of halwa that any Indian can recognize. This Pear Halwa Cake has become so popular in my household, I’ve actually been making it almost on a weekly basis.
Halwa for Indians usually means there is a special occasion or festival to be celebrated. Growing up, I looked forward to my mom having a special pooja (religious ceremony for the Gods and Deities) or going to the temple so that I could have the halwa usually offered after these religious events.

Imagine a dessert that beautifully fuses the aromatic richness of halwa with the delicate sweetness of seasonal pears. Yes, I’m talking about the delightful Pear Halwa Cake – a unique fusion creation that celebrates the best of both worlds.

This cake embodies the harmonious blend of two culinary worlds. Picture the decadent flavors of halwa, a traditional South Asian sweet treat, transfigured into a cake that embraces the subtlety of seasonal pears. It’s a marriage of cultures and tastes that’s both comforting and creatively inspiring.

With the arrival of fall, nature bestows upon us an abundance of ripe and juicy pears. These seasonal delights play a pivotal role in this unique dessert, infusing their natural sweetness and tender texture into the heart of the cake. The Pear Halwa Cake isn’t just a dessert; it’s an experience. The gentle sweetness of the pears dances in harmony with the rich essence of halwa, creating a symphony of flavors that delights the taste buds and warms the soul.

This delightful creation invites us to savor the fusion of cultures and the beauty of seasonal produce. It’s a celebration of diverse flavors coming together to create something truly extraordinary.
So, take a moment to relish this fusion dessert, appreciating the seasonal wonders while enjoying the rich tapestry of flavors.

From my kitchen to yours, enjoy this delicious Pear Halwa Cake!
Pear Halwa Cake
Ingredients
- 9 Tbsp All Purpose Flour
- 10 Tbsp butter, at room temperature
- 9 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp flax seeds
- 1/3 c milk
- ½ c raw almonds
- ¼ c raw pistachios
- 2 med pears, very ripe, peeled, cored and chopped
- 1 tsp baking powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375ºF
- Line an 8" springform pan with parchment paper (cut off excess from sides) and spray with cooking spray.
- In a small food processor, grind almonds and pistachios together. Don't grind into a powder but make sure the chunks are not too big.
- Cream together butter and sugar until they are fluffy and pale.
- Add in the flax seeds and milk and continue mixing to make the batter fluffy and airy.
- Use a spatula to fold in flour and baking soda.
- Fold in ¾ of the ground nuts mix.
- Spoon batter into pan. You may need to shake out the batter and use the spatula to even it out in the pan.
- Layer pears on top of the batter.
- Bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle the remaining ground nut mix over the cake. Return to the oven and bake for another 8-10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and let the cake cool for 15 minutes. The edges of the cake should detach from the pan. If not, take a thin butter knife and ease the cake from the pan. Release the springform, and transfer cake to cake stand.
Notes
I used a springform pan versus a traditional cake pan to make it easier to transfer the cake.
This cake is only going to be about 1 - 1½" in height. It may rise during the baking process but will come to it's natural size once cooled.
